FROM RECEPTIONIST COUNTERS TO THE OCEAN’S HORIZON

My Bittersweet Climb Through Guest Services at sea

Some careers begin with a plan. Mine began with a desk, a name tag and a simple desire to help people feel welcome. I started as a receptionist somewhere around Westland’s in Nairobi. Young, eager and unaware that this first step would eventually lead me across oceans, cultures and countless unforgettable moments.

Back then, I didn’t know that the front desk would become more than a job. It would become a lifestyle, a classroom and sometimes a test of patience and resilience. But most of all, it would become my story.

My first contract onboard a cruise ship in guest services was a shock to the system. The pace was relentless, the expectations high and the learning curve steep. But there was something magical about waking up each day in a new port, meeting guests from every corner of the world and working alongside crew members who quickly became family.

Guest services on a ship is unlike anything on land. You’re not just solving problems but also living with the people you serve. You see them at breakfast, at the theater, in the hallways and everywhere else on the boat. You learn to smile even when you’re exhausted, to stay calm even when the line at the desk feels endless and to find joy in the smallest victories.

As the months turned into years, I moved through different ranks and different cruise lines. Each promotion felt like a small sunrise and a reminder that hard work, long days and countless “How can I help you today?” moments were shaping me into someone stronger and more capable.

I learned to handle difficult conversations with grace.

I learned to lead a team with empathy.

I learned that every guest has a story and sometimes they just need someone to listen to.

Every ship taught me something new. Every crew member taught me something about teamwork. Every challenge taught me something about myself.

People often imagine cruise ship life as glamorous sunsets, beaches and endless adventure. And yes, those moments exist. But so do the bittersweet ones.

You miss birthdays, holidays and milestones back home.
You work when you’re tired, stressed or homesick.
You learn to balance your own emotions while supporting thousands of others.

Yet somehow, the sea keeps calling you back.

There’s a unique pride in being part of the heartbeat of a ship. In knowing that your smile, your patience and your professionalism help shape someone’s vacation and sometimes even their once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience.

Looking back, I see more than a career. I see a transformation.

From a receptionist to an ocean leader who has navigated storms both literal and emotional with resilience.

Working across different cruise lines and ranks didn’t just build my résumé. It built my character. It taught me adaptability, cultural awareness, leadership and the art of staying calm through the storms.

My journey in guest services is far from over. Whether on land or at sea, the lessons I’ve learned continue to guide me. The ocean may be unpredictable, but it has shaped me into someone who can handle whatever waves come next.

And that  in all its bittersweet beauty is the story of how I grew through the ranks, one guest, one ship, and one unforgettable experience at a time.
